Pallet adjustment model

The starting point is the correctly adjusted escapement, following the workshop rule: drop lock ⅛, depth of lock ¼ of the impulse face. Each slider moves a pallet or banking pin relative to this setting. The views show both vibrations before drop, at landing or at the banking; the correct setting is dashed.

Lever degrees unless stated otherwise; HF = proportion of the impulse face (length along the locking face ÷ impulse-face length between the pallet's corners). Smaller figures below: correctly adjusted reference value.

Predict first, then adjust, then explain

1. Only the exit pallet is withdrawn by 0.01 mm. What changes — including on the entry side?

2. The entry-side banking is opened by 0.25°. What stays the same?

3. Both pallets are pushed in by the same amount. When does the tooth begin to drop onto the impulse face?

4. At entry, run is excessive and drop lock is small. Which pallet should be withdrawn?

5. The exercise: which pallet, which direction, how far?

Think it through first, then use the button to switch between calculated states: initial condition, Route 1 via the pallets, a banking-pin cross-check and Route 2 to the workshop rule.

Values calculated using the model's shapes; pallets in 0.005 mm steps and banking in 0.25° steps (lever angles accurate to about 0.02°). Indicator: workshop rule green up to 20% deviation, amber up to 40%, then red; run amber below 0.5°; residual lock with guard pin in contact red at 0° or less — display thresholds for this page, not a standard.
